MIKE'S BOAT TRIPS

2026-06-09 Salmon Trolling at Mountain Point
I'm not going to say much about this trip because it was a pretty discouraging and disappointing day. I pulled out of my slip at about 6:45 AM in calm sunny weather. I spent 8 1/2 hours trolling in the Mountain Point and Carroll Point areas without even a single bump or strike on the line. I guess the only good news is that this was my first time using my new Scotty electric downrigger and it worked flawlessly. I guess the other good news is that the new charger that I got f

2026-06-01 Port Stewart/Naha Trip
I am always watching the weather, looking for at least 2 - 3 days of little to no rain and little to no wind. It's hard to find those kinds of days in this country. If I see them then I look at my calendar to see if I have any commitments here in town that would prevent me from heading out on the water. Sometimes I have meetings that I can attend remotely since I now have WiFi on board. The weather forecasts for Monday & Tuesday June 1st & 2nd were very good. The only mi

2026-05-25 Shelter Cove Trip
As I have noted before in these posts, I have numerous volunteer commitments that sometimes keep me in town. So, my modus operandi now is that I first check my personal calendar to see what days I have available to get out on a trip. If I see a few days that are open, then next I check what I call the "regular weather" with wunderground.com. That will show me if rain or very low temperatures are expected during the days I have available for a trip. Then lastly, and probab

2026-05-24 Update
I didn't want the very few people who actually read this blog to think that I have been inactive, so I am posting this just to let you know what I have been up to. On 2026-05-16 I did what I call a "Harbor Cruise" with some friends of mine. I don't want to invade their privacy, so I am including no photos of them or of the trip. It was a nice sunny Saturday, and I had spent most of Friday scrubbing the decks, so she was nice and shiny and didn't smell of shrimp bait. We pu

2026-04-28 Western Behm Canal Trip
I had really been wanting to make a trip up to Klu Bay in Western Behm Canal because it is such a beautiful place to visit. But it's about 50 miles to get up there so it is a long run for my slow boat. Because of that I usually try to make a 3-day 2-night trip out of it. That was the original plan for this trip however plans changed significantly mid-trip. Here is a map snippet from my Garmin InReach that shows my track for this trip. I did make it to Klu Bay for a day an

2026-04-10 Wrangell Maintenance Trip
OK, I know I haven't been out for about 2 months, which is unusual for me, even in winter. Here are my excuses. First, I am doing many volunteer jobs and sometimes those keep me in town. Second, weather. And this is the biggest. We had a much rougher winter than usual, with much more cold weather and snow. Third, work being done on the boat. When a project is in progress sometimes the mechanic or electrician has to come back several times, and I am bound by their schedules.

2026-02-13 Marguerite Bay Trip
After weeks of research on Jan 30th the mechanic and his young and strong able-bodied helper successfully swapped out my batteries, so I was operational again! My plan was to pull out right at daylight for this trip, which was about 7 AM. I did all the steps on my pre-trip checklist and was just in the process of untying the last of the mooring lines when I noticed water pumping out from one of the bilge pump ports. That shouldn't be happening and it required immediate inves

2026-01-23 Grounded Again! (Sort of)
When I got ready to leave the Naha on my last trip and I attempted to fire up the main engines the starboard engine started but the port engine would not start. Just by the way it sounded I suspected that the problem was low voltage on the starting battery. So, I shut down the starboard engine and then fired up the generator, which has its own dedicated starting battery. I ran the generator for a bit, and it charged the batteries. Then I started both engines with no issue

2026-01-16 Naha Trip
This was my first trip of 2026, and of course it had to be to the Naha, one of my favorite places in the whole world! I haven't been out in a while. My excuses are: Deferred maintenance - I had some maintenance that needed to be done but wasn't urgent Bad weather - This time of the year is famous for really bad weather More bad weather - We had a lot of it! City League Basketball - I can only get out on Friday & Saturday during the season Here is a little map snippet tha

2025-12-08 Cruising Update
Well, I haven't been out on the boat since late October. That is unusual for me, but sometimes it happens. For the very few people that might be reading this blog here is what is going on. This time of year, our area has the worst weather. When I was working full-time, I only had the weekends and vacations and holidays to go out. I would schedule a trip and unless it was blowing a hurricane I just went and dealt with the weather as it came. However, I have been retired fo

2025-10-31 Scrubbing the bottom
I usually run the boat up to Wrangell each year in mid-April for haul out and annual maintenance, which includes pressure washing the bottom and changing any zincs that need it. However, in the fall, when the weather is typically pretty bad, I don't want to run all the way to Wrangell, so I try to find a diver to go down, scrub the bottom, and change the zincs. This year I found Ketchikan Dive Services Daniel Yutronich to take care of that for me. He came down on a pretty st

2025-10-25 Carroll Inlet Trip
I was really undecided about even making this trip. The weather on Saturday was a bit iffy, while Sunday looked pretty good. But then I realized that our City League basketball season is about to start and once it starts, I am very limited in when I am able to get out for overnight trips. So that pushed it over the top, and I decided the trip was a go. Some may recall that about a year ago I left in the dark and hit something in the water that caused a lot of expensive dam
